Big Shoulders…

Filed under: Uncategorized — stevemryan @ 9:52 pm

I resumed my tournament tonight with a battle between two teams from the City of Big Shoulders.  Not sure if that is even a nickname for Chicago, but I think I heard it on an episode of M*A*S*H.  Sounds good to me and if I was betting it was the episode with Adam’s Ribs.  I won’t recount the whole episode, but it is one of my top 10 and that is one of my top 2 or 3 favorite shows of all-time.

So the team from Chicago won.  Actually the team that opened Wrigley Field.  Not the Cubs, but the Whalers of the Federal League in 1914.  The score was 2-1 and it was an interesting game. The White Sox rallied in the bottom of the 9th.  With a runner on and one run already in, the roll resulted in a fly out to center field that would have been an error if the Whalers had a lower fielding rating.

This White Sox team has some of the building blocks for the team that was a few years away from being not only a perennial contender in the American League, but the main characters in the movie Eight Men Out.  One of the best baseball movies ever.

That is one of the best movies even if it was a bit loose with the truth.  My understanding is that several of the players from the other team in that infamous 1919 World Series were trying to throw games as well.  I am sure that has to be an inaccuracy because my beloved Reds have always been above reproach and if you don’t believe me, ask A Bartlett Giamatti or his son Paul.  So who really knows the truth?  As for me, Life is good!

There's a fine line between visionary and wrong. Unfortunately, it takes a visionary to see it.
