1958 Pittsburgh Steelers @ 1958 Baltimore Colts – September 3, 2022

1958 Colt & Steeler Rosters

I used the latest 1958 cards, but the roster sheet I found didn’t have all of the players. I used the extra players in the roles that seemed appropriate according to the football-reference website.

The Colts & Steelers

I use the simple score card from the FB Reference spreadsheet. There is another collaboration that includes a list of rules and the changes since the early 1970s. That helps me since I don’t remember all of the rule changes and when they happened.

Reference Sheet

I played the Master Game in my own way. Since I am playing solo, I use the allocation tables for receivers, interceptors and sacks. The newest cards have pass receiving ratings, interception ratings and Quarterback Sack Ratings. These ratings work with the allocation tables so I could roll the dice and select a receiver for pass plays. This added an extra level of excitement with each offensive play call. I chose to let the table select all of the receivers, so pass plays had an added risk of lowering or raising the index depending on the receiver’s pass catching rating.

The Defensive Football Play Calling Cards helped determine which formation and defensive index were used for the defense. Ultimately, the dice determine the outcome of the plays, but the play calls can increase or decrease the probabilities for success or failure.

The Baltimore Defense was +5 against the run and +8 versus the pass. Pittsburgh defense was -3 against the pass & run. The Steelers were in a more difficult situation as the Colts had the more favorable defensive cards determining their indexes and formations.

My rough quotas for Ball Carriers

I used the average rushing attempts per game. Then I went through the box scores to find how many rushing attempts were the most each player took during any game during the season. I also checked passing attempts for the quarterbacks.

My Setup – Defensive Play Calling cards in front, rushers and passers, special teams, and the rest of the cards

I am using the Master Football Game for the first time solitaire. I have played some Master Games at the convention against the APBA Master Head-to-Head Guru Greg Wells. I believe if the APBA Football players who have played in the convention tournament were polled, their consensus would be that Greg is the best head-to-head player.

Greg won the first couple of Convention Football Tournaments, and hasn’t played in the more recent tournaments I am guessing because of the time involved. The Tournament head-to-head games would take close to three hours and sometimes longer. Now the games are considered 10-10 at the half and played to conclusion. I played in a tournament and the game took over four hours and I almost missed going to dinner with some friends. The ‘half-games’ can be played in under an hour and a half.

I am enjoying the Pro Football Helper and the ease with which it records plays and stats. It is a great tool for anyone who wants to learn the football game better. There are even videos on YouTube to help get started.

I choose the Steelers because they traded for Bobby Layne during the season and the Steelers most likely would have been contenders if Layne had been on their roster the whole season. Their season record was 7-4-1. After starting 0-2 the Steelers acquired Layne, won their first game , dropped two then finished 6-0-1 in their final seven games. I wonder how good the Steelers would have been if Layne had had the whole season and pre-season on Pittsburgh’s roster?

The 1958 Pittsburgh Steelers Schedule and Results

The Giants faced the Colts in a Championship game that was considered one of the greatest games ever. Some of that credit is due to the television broadcast and the excitement of the game that went to overtime. As shown above, the Steelers lost to the Giants by a touchdown in the fifth game, but trounced the eventual divisional winners by three touchdowns after Layne was more comfortable in the offense.

I will post the play-by-play from my game as well as the boxscore and the final screen from the Pro Football Helper 5.0.7. While my game didn’t go into overtime, the Steelers overcame some early difficulties with a greased pigskin to have a chance in the final minutes of the game.

01:45 – TIME-OUT – The Pittsburgh Steelers call their 1st Time-Out.

BAL – 01:15 – ( 20 – 14 ) – It’s 1st and 10 … the Colts set up in Pistol Formation … Johnny Unitas takes the snap … and gives it to L.G. Dupre … he slams through the line of scrimmage … cuts left … hit hard and brought down … a decent gain of 15 yards … and that will move the chains … as it’s 1st and 10 from the Pittsburgh 46.

BAL – 01:05 – ( 20 – 14 ) – Baltimore came into this game with a 0-0-0 record … and with 01:15 left here in the 4th Quarter … they have a good chance to improve on that … Johnny Unitas takes the snap … and gives it to Jack Call … he runs right … downed linemen litter the field … OH, HE HAD CLEAR SAILING … BUT WAS TRIPPED UP BY A TIMELY TACKLE … a gain of 7 yards … that sets up a 2nd and 3 from the Pittsburgh 39.

01:05 – TIME-OUT – The Pittsburgh Steelers call their 2nd Time-Out.

BAL – 00:55 – ( 20 – 14 ) – It’s 2nd and 3 … the Colts set up in the shotgun … they’ve got 209 yards rushing so far … Johnny Unitas takes the snap … and gives it to Alan Ameche … heads left … now veers to the right … through the line … and out the other side … and now he’s up-ended … a gain of 7 yards … and that will move the chains … as it’s 1st and 10 from the Pittsburgh 32.

00:55 – TIME-OUT – The Pittsburgh Steelers call their 3rd and final Time-Out.

BAL – 00:25 – ( 20 – 14 ) – Johnny Unitas doesn’t like what he see’s and audibles at the line … now he hands it to L.G. Dupre … he tries the left side … no lanes anywhere … AND THE STEELERS HAD THAT DEFENDED PERFECTLY … no gain … and Johnny Unitas looks skyward … perhaps second-guessing himself on the play call … that sets up a 2nd and 10 from the Pittsburgh 32.

BAL – 00:00 – ( 20 – 14 ) – BROKEN PLAY … Johnny Unitas flips it back to Jack Call in desperation … he bashes his way forward … no gain … as he’s dropped just as he reaches the line of scrimmage … it’s now 3rd and 10 from the Pittsburgh 32. And that does it … the final score … the Baltimore Colts 20 and the Pittsburgh Steelers 14 … until next time, this is CBS signing off from Pittsburgh.

Notes:

PFH v5.0.7

Pro Football Helper 5.0.7

It was a fun game and on their last possession, the Colts finally got the dice to heat up to help burn the Pittsburgh allotment of timeouts and run out the clock.
